INDIA : January 2025 : A Month of Tragedy, Turmoil, and Tradition

January 2025 opened with a series of tragic events across India, highlighting issues of violence, safety, and social unrest. Early in the month, a horrific suspected honor killing in Lucknow resulted in the deaths of five female family members, shining a light on persistent societal challenges. Around the same time, the body of missing journalist Mukesh Chandrakar was discovered in a septic tank in Chhattisgarh, raising concerns over press safety and criminal justice.

Disasters struck repeatedly: an Indian Coast Guard HAL Dhruv helicopter crashed during training in Gujarat, claiming three lives, while nine miners lost their lives due to flooding in a coal mine in Assam. Violent conflicts continued with nine police officers killed by a landmine planted by Naxalites in Chhattisgarh, underscoring ongoing insurgency problems. Additionally, a deadly stampede at the Venkateswara Temple in Andhra Pradesh caused multiple fatalities and injuries, reflecting issues with crowd control at religious sites.

The month also witnessed socio-political debates sparked by Larsen & Toubro chairman S. N. Subrahmanyan’s controversial statement about a 90-hour workweek and working Sundays, igniting public discussions about work-life balance in India’s corporate culture.

On the infrastructure front, the Sonamarg Tunnel in Jammu and Kashmir was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a significant development aimed at improving regional connectivity.

The 2025 Prayag Maha Kumbh Mela, one of the world’s largest religious gatherings, ran from mid-January through February. While it was a grand spiritual event, it was marred by tragedies including a fire that destroyed 18 temporary tents and a devastating crowd crush that killed at least 30 people, highlighting the challenges of managing massive crowds during such events.

Celebrity news also made headlines when actor Saif Ali Khan was stabbed during a robbery attempt at his Mumbai home, highlighting security concerns even among public figures.

Justice took a notable turn when Sanjay Roy was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for the 2024 Kolkata rape and murder case, representing a milestone in a high-profile legal battle.

Other fatal incidents included a train collision in Maharashtra killing 13 people and a deadly explosion at an ordnance factory in Bhandara district that claimed eight lives.

Overall, January 2025 was marked by a juxtaposition of tradition and turmoil, with India facing numerous tragedies while also showcasing cultural milestones.
